Crau hay

Our hay comes from natural pastures all located in the plain of the Crau region delimiting the area of the appellation d'origine contrôlée Foin De Crau (Crau Hay).

The plant species that compose these grasslands are of great diversity (a hundred are referenced; at least twenty are mandatory). This great diversity gives Crau hay all of its qualities.

The know-how of the producers for developing these qualities, aided by favourable weather conditions, makes our hay exceptional nourishment:.

Natural / Balanced / Palatable
Nourishing / Rich in nutriments !

Three cuts are made each year from May to September. Each has a flora and dominant characteristics adapted to each breeding stock.

The first cut: rich in coarse grasses, is reserved for feeding race horses and for fattening cattle.

The second cut: is finer, and is ideal for mares, cows and sheep as it enhances their dairy performance while maintaining body condition.

The third cut: rich in legume, gives excellent results for increasing sheep and goat milk production and quality.

Nutritional values of Crau Hay :

  • Same amount of dry matter content for the three cuts at approximately 91%.
  • Very rich in mineral matter whatever the cut (above the French reference).
  • Low crude fibre, resulting in increased digestibility
  • Rich in calcium (up to twice normal amount).
  • Has good magnesium content.
  • Rich in Sodium which partly explains its palatability.
  • Has good sulphur content.

Harvesting is done with modern and powerful tools but the hay is similar in all respects to that produced by our grandparents.

It is packed with red and white baling twine and rigorous traceability guarantees its origin.
