Our Terroir

The Crau plain lies in the south of France, in Provence.

It forms a triangle of 52,000 hectares between Arles, Salon de Provence and Fos sur Mer.

Originally barren heath, it has all the characteristics of a Mediterranean climate, characterised primarily by periods of severe and regular droughts from spring to autumn.

Enhancement by man through irrigation for nearly five hundred years, it now houses our old meadows, some of which are centuries old, in a wooded landscape.

The Crau is made of massive Durancian pebbles accumulated over a considerable thickness. These were cemented together with the run-off water to form the "tuff" or pudding stone, a resistant and impervious rock.

The plain of the Crau has an aquifer that is of primary importance. The water used for irrigating the hay meadows of Crau feeds much of this reservoir.
